(*** – I would have to unplug the display every time I stepped away from the machine for more than five to ten minutes or I'd inevitably come back to a "post-kernel-panic-login-screen".Are you getting ready to install macOS Mojave? Or perhaps you’ve already finished the upgrade and have started exploring the new Mojave system. All of these cables work flawlessly with the same display and the Intel MBP, none of them are outright defective.) Now, if you'll excuse me while I go and light a candle in my office window to keep the evil spirits at bay. At least in my case it would seem that this machine is more susceptible (sensitive?) to cable shielding and/or signal degradation than my previous 16" 2019 Core i9 MacBook Pro. if you encounter issues with your M1 MacBook Pro and a Thunderbolt display, try alternative cables. Jeff Bezos just had these available immediately for me. And while you see a lot of mention of Caldigit cables in this post, I'm convinced this 'success' would've been possible with any set of high quality TB cable the M1 MBP isn't 'sensitive' to. The three scenarios that have been working for me so far are: a 2m active Caldigit TB4 cable from the display to the M1 MacBook Pro, a shorter 1m Caldigit TB4 cable from display to machine (for obvious reasons not a great solution since that's a tad too short), as well as the 2m TB4 cable connecting to the TB dock and then the 1m TB4 cable from the dock to the MBP. Something the machine had not been able to manage with any of my 'old' (**) Thunderbolt cables for almost three weeks prior (***). it's almost 48 hours into my MacBook Pro M1 Max being connected non-stop to my LG 34BK95U-W display via Thunderbolt (*), and I've had zero crashes, hangups or kernel panics. Adding in the dock or leaving it out made no difference there, it would crash under both scenarios. The only constants are/were "M1 MBP + known good TB-cable (*) + known good LG display (*)". I've got plenty of kernel panic logs and even video of endless boot loops using both scenarios. It makes/made no difference whether I hook/ed up my LG display up directly to the M1 MBP or via TB dock. (* – these two, cable and display, are known to work flawlessly with my 16" Core i9 Intel MBP over the course of 21 months) But it's only been 18 hours or so, too early to tell for sure. The M1 MBP hasn't crashed since I replaced the previously used cables with a new one I received last night. They've never given me trouble before, but might just be that the/my M1 Max MBP is pickier in regards to signal degradation than the Core i9 one. Initial indication following a test with new/different Thunderbolt cables seem to point towards the cables I've previously used as a potential cause for the M1's instability.
